What can we do, in a most certainly uncertain economy, to improve our local government and its delivery of services? The Exit, Voice and Loyalty political framework developed by Albert O. Hirschman explains some options. If you do not agree with a particular policy path, you can either leave/ exit the system (an option available to those with resources) or become an activist, using your voice to convince others to take a different approach, or to assist in pressuring those in charge to take that different approach (the power of blogging and the web are breaking down previous barriers to communication and making the voice heard in exponential ways). Loyalty to systems and/ or participants in the systems mitigate the exit v. voice options.
